UPDATE: Community COVID-19 outbreaks declared in Windsor-Essex

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported a new outbreak of COVID-19 at a church on Tuesday morning.

Public health officials confirmed the outbreak on Monday at Oakwood Bible Chapel on Cabana Road West in Windsor, with the more infectious Delta variant.

A second outbreak in the community was declared last Thursday at the Downtown Mission.

On Tuesday evening, the health unit reported that a third outbreak, at the Vollmer Recreation Complex in LaSalle, did not take place. Instead, people who visited the complex on Wednesday, October 20 between 9:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. are being asked to self-monitor for 14 days and get a COVID-19 test if they feel ill.

The health unit also reported 30 new cases of COVID-19 and 170 active infections across the region.

Of the new cases, 15 resulted from close contact with someone the health unit is already following. Another five people caught the virus in the community, while one is related to travel, and 15 are under investigation.

Province-wide, the number of active infections has fallen to 3,051.  The Ontario government reported 269 cases and six deaths from the virus.

Eleven people are currently in the hospital with COVID-19. Eight of those are at Windsor Regional Hospital, and none of them are vaccinated.

Six schools across Windsor-Essex have outbreaks. Tecumseh Vista Academy is the most recent with three cases. There are five students at Mount Carmel-Blytheswood Public School with the virus. Giles Campus French Immersion Public School has three students with the infection. At Westgate, there are three, eight at St. Anne's French Immersion Catholic School, and five at Leamington District Secondary School reported five.

A total of 612 schools across the province have had a case of COVID-19 since the start of the school year.  On Tuesday, there were 150 new cases in schools, involving 140 students.

Over 85 per cent of residents over the age of 12 have had at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 80.9 per cent are fully vaccinated.
