Spitfires downed by Rangers 3-2 in shootout

The Windsor Spitfires dropped a 3-2 decision against the Kitchener Rangers during an away game Friday night.

As the teams skated into the first period, the Rangers proved they were eager to get the game started with the first goal of the game. However, the Spits soon caught up with a goal by Kyle McDonald 15:53 into the game in an effort to tie things up 1-1 to end the first frame.

During the second frame, Windsor right-winger Matthew Maggio broke the tie with a shot in the Ranger's net 6:39 in, giving the team a slight lead. The second period ended with the Spits ahead of the Rangers 2-1.

Going into third, the Rangers secured a second goal just over four minutes into the final period, forcing Windsor to try and break the tie again. With no response from either team by the end of the period, the game is forced into overtime.

Windsor was able to keep things tied up in OT and the teams headed into a shootout. The Spits ultimately dropped the tie after the Rangers were able to hold the lead capping off the game 3-2.

Spitfires goalie Xavier Medina aggressively defended his net making 27 saves out of 29 shots on net by the Rangers.

Windsor will have a chance to redeem themselves on Saturday when they take on the Owen Sound Attack in another away game Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
