Region hits new vaccination milestone

As of Monday morning, 80 per cent of all residents who can get a COVID-19 shot in Windsor-Essex has had one.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported the new milestone Monday morning.

It said there are also 4.8 per cent, or 18,267 people, who have had one dose and are still waiting to get their second.

That's still below the provincial vaccination rate. As of Sunday night, 84.9 per cent of all eligible Ontario residents, or 10.8-million people, were fully vaccinated.

The health unit also reported a total of 69 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend. There were 31 on Saturday, 21 on Sunday, and 17 Monday morning.

Of those cases, public health officials are still investigating how eight people were infected, but they know 38 got COVID-19 from close contact with another patient who has a confirmed case. Another 18 caught the virus in the community, three are travel-related, and two more are related to outbreaks.

The number of active cases in Windsor-Essex continues to fall. As of Monday, there were 227 across the region, of which 14 people were in the hospital.

Of the 19 outbreaks, nine are at workplaces, eight are at schools, one is in the community, and one more is in a long-term care or retirement home.

Ontario recorded 373 new COVID-19 cases on Monday and two new deaths. Another 52 cases were added to the resolved column, so there are 3,846 active cases across the province.
