City cracks down on illegal parking and stopping near schools

Once again, the City of Windsor's Parking Enforcement Division will carry out a blitz near schools.

It regularly conducts stepped-up enforcement around schools, but there have been a lot of complaints lately from residents who live nearby about illegal stopping and parking.

"The safety of the children is paramount," said Coordinator of Parking Services Bill Kralovensky. "Letting your child out across the street from their school to cross oncoming traffic creates a situation that is extremely dangerous."

Traffic around schools has increased significantly since students returned to class, and stopped vehicles reduce sight lines for other drivers and endanger pedestrians.

Kralovensky said the city hired extra enforcement officers, and they will be at schools where the problem is the worst.

He said drivers should let their children walk to school if they live nearby. That reduces the number of vehicles near schools. If not, they should obey the signs posted in school zones.

Tickets for those who park illegally can range from $40 for stopping in a no-stopping zone to $100 for obstructing the flow of traffic.
