What's open and closed in Windsor-Essex this Thanksgiving?

Many Windsor-Essex businesses will be closed or on reduced hours Monday, so employees can spend time at home for Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is a federal statutory holiday, which means that on Monday, all federal, provincial and municipal offices are closed. There will be no Canada Post delivery. All banks, credit unions and other financial institutions will also be closed.

All ServiceOntario branches will be closed on Thanksgiving. Some transactions though can still be performed through their official website.

All four public school boards in Windsor-Essex will not hold classes Monday. The same applies to the University of Windsor and St. Clair College. All classes will resume on Tuesday.

All branches of the Windsor Public Library and the Essex County Library will be closed on Thanksgiving. Regular fall hours will resume at select branches Tuesday.

All Beer Store and LCBO outlets will be closed on Thanksgiving.

Devonshire Mall and Tecumseh Mall will be closed on Thanksgiving, but Windsor Crossing outlet mall in LaSalle is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Many retail outlets and chain restaurants will either be closed or on abbreviated hours. If you'd prefer not to cook on Thanksgiving and want to visit a restaurant, be sure to call ahead to avoid disappointment.

Residential garbage, yard waste and recyclable collection in Windsor normally done on Monday will be delayed a day. Commercial garbage collection will take place as normal. The public drop-off centre at Central and EC Row in Windsor will be closed on Thanksgiving.

The 311 call centre will be closed Monday with reduced hours resuming Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The 211 call centre will operate 24 hours a day as usual to serve all Windsor-Essex residents.

All indoor recreation facilities in the City of Windsor will be closed Monday with the exception of the H4 program at Windsor Water World, which will operate from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Capri Pizzeria, Forest Glade, Adie Knox Herman, Gino and Liz Marcus, Optimist, John Atkinson Memorial Centre, and Windsor Water World will reopen for rentals and after-school programming on Tuesday.

Adventure Bay Family Water Park and Cannon Cove are closed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There will be no parking enforcement in Windsor on Monday. Metered street parking is free Thanksgiving and all traffic fine payment offices will be closed. Parking garages and lots, however, will be paid as usual.

The Francois Baby House and Chimczuk Museum in Windsor remain closed indefinitely due to the city’s reduced COVID-19 service protocol.

Transit Windsor buses will operate on a Sunday-holiday schedule Monday. The downtown transit terminal will be open Monday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., though the sales office on North Service Road will be closed. Masks and face coverings are required to ride any busses.
