Windsor philanthropist comes through for Thanksgiving

It will be a happy Thanksgiving for some of Windsor-Essex's vulnerable population, thanks again to the generosity of a local businessman.

Hand in Hand Support, a Windsor-based non-profit organization that helps clients recover from addiction and make contributions to the community, will receive a gift this Thanksgiving from philanthropist Sam Sinjari. With Sinjari's support, Hand in Hand will receive a freezer, along with a full Thanksgiving meal, so that clients can enjoy a hot holiday dinner.

Hand in Hand Executive Director Elizabeth Geddes said the donation will help clients come together as one.

"We are so grateful for Mr. Sinjari’s generosity as we could not make this happen without this type of support," said Geddes in a media release. "This Thanksgiving, we want to ensure that the men and women who are staying with us will be able to be a part of our family here at Hand in Hand, in recovery, so that they are able to spend many more of these special times with their own families, in sobriety."

Sinjari said Hand in Hand was an easy choice to support.

"This agency has taken on the enormous challenge of addressing addiction and mental health in our community. They are on-the-ground service providers working directly with people suffering from addiction," said Sinjari in a statement. "I know that the holiday season can be particularly hard for folks working toward recovery, I hope that this meal will help to send a caring message that will help their clients transition back into better health and sobriety."

Hand in Hand Support opened this past spring and now operates two transitional sober-living homes for men, and one for women, across Windsor-Essex. The agency's mission is to support addicts at various stages of their recovery.

The Thanksgiving dinner made possible by Sinjari's donation will be celebrated Monday at the agency's Olde Sandwich Towne location.
