WECHU reports big increase in daily COVID-19 cases

There was a big jump in the number of new COVID-19 cases Thursday in Windsor-Essex.

The health unit recorded 91 new cases after 48 were reported Wednesday. No new deaths were confirmed, keeping the Windsor-Essex death toll at 439.

Among Thursday's new cases, 14 were community-acquired, 13 were close contacts of confirmed cases, three were travel-related, two were connected to outbreaks, and the rest were being investigated.

There was also another increase in Windsor-Essex's active caseload, which went from 408 to 446. A total of 272 active cases involve a variant of concern.

According to the health unit, the number of COVID-19 patients being treated in local hospitals has dropped from 13 to 11. There are now nine active outbreaks in workplaces, plus one outbreak tied to a recent wedding.

As of Wednesday, the health unit said 71.4 per cent of eligible residents have been fully vaccinated. For those with only one dose so far, that number involves 78.6 per cent of residents 12 and older.

There was a potential exposure point reported Thursday at the Ciociaro Club in Tecumseh. The health unit that the exposure took place on Saturday, August 14, in the B and C Halls of the complex.

While the risk of exposure is low, the health unit has asked anyone who was in those two halls at the time to self-monitor for symptoms for two weeks from the date of exposure. This exposure is the only active one in Windsor-Essex.
