Over a ton of pot seized at Detroit border facility

U.S. border agents helped get at least a ton, literally, of illicit marijuana smuggled from Canada off the streets.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents in Detroit announced Tuesday that a tractor-trailer entering the States from Canada was found with 2,583 pounds of marijuana on Wednesday.

The tractor-trailer entered the country from the Ambassador Bridge and was referred to the secondary inspection site at the Fort Street Cargo Facility for a closer look at the cargo. The cargo was listed on the manifest as aluminum caps.

The load was x-rayed and agents found inconsistencies within the goods, so the cargo was searched by hand, uncovering the illicit pot.

The marijuana was seized along with the vehicle and the trailer. There was no word from CBP about any potential criminal charges.

"While CBP Field Operations continues to facilitate lawful trade and travel, drug interdiction remains an enforcement priority," said CBP Detroit Port Director Devin Chamberlain. "The men and women of CBP continue to work to keep dangerous and unregulated substances from hitting the streets of the U.S."

The Detroit Field Office has experienced a substantial increase in the attempted smuggling of contraband since border restrictions used to curb the COVID-19 pandemic were put in place in March 2020.

The Detroit Field Office has jurisdiction at all border crossings in Michigan, including the Ambassador Bridge and Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, the Blue Water Bridge, the International Bridge at Sault Ste. Marie, Detroit Metropolitan Airport, and other places where international trade is conducted.
