Health unit reports 13 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday

Since Friday, 13 more people in Windsor-Essex have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.

There were four cases reported on Saturday, six on Sunday, and three on Monday morning.

While seven cases remain under investigation, five people caught the virus after close contact with another person who has a confirmed infection. One resident caught it in the community.

There are 24 active cases in the region, four of which involve a variant of concern, and two people remain in one of the area's hospitals with the virus.

The health unit reports no outbreaks in Windsor-Essex at this time.

Meanwhile, the region's vaccination rate continues to climb. About 66.9 per cent or 244,681 residents are fully vaccinated, while another 41,685 still need to get their second dose.

Windsor-Essex's rate is slightly above the provincial one. Ontario Health said 68.1 per cent of the province's residents had two shots so far.

The Ford government has said it wants at least 75 per cent of the total population to be fully vaccinated before the province enters the final step of its reopening plan. In that step, virtually all remaining public health restrictions will be lifted.

Across Canada, just over half of the country's adult population has had both doses of the vaccine, while 57.45 per cent of those 12 and older have.
