Windsor police cleared after man jumps from window

The Special Investigations Unit has relieved Windsor police of responsibility after a man hurt himself earlier this month.

Officers were called on the morning of July 8 to a home on Ypres Avenue, responding to a 911 call from that location. Once officers arrived, a man in the house suddenly ran to the second floor and jumped from a bedroom window. He landed on a set of concrete patio slabs and was treated for fractured feet.

With police on the scene when someone was injured, the SIU invoked its mandate. The investigation has ended since it was determined the man jumped from the window on his own accord.

"With no interaction with police prior to his jump, he alone is responsible for his injuries. As a result, the investigation has been discontinued," wrote SIU Director Joseph Martino.

The SIU is Ontario's law-enforcement oversight agency, which independently investigates incidents in which death, injury, or sexual assault has taken place with officers present.
