Vaccination rates plateauing in Windsor-Essex

As COVID-19 cases are surging once again around the world, Windsor's medical officer of health is urging residents to get vaccinated.

"We still have a lot of room for improvement. I'd like to see our vaccination rate in each of these age bands at a minimum of 70 per cent and overall 80 per cent or more," said Dr. Wajid Ahmed.

Currently, 74.8 per cent of the eligible population has been partially vaccinated and 62.7 per cent has been fully vaccinated.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit indicated the region has plenty of supply of both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines.

"There are quite a number of individuals in our community who have received their first dose and not yet their second. We don't have all the reasons why individuals are waiting," said CEO Nicole Dupuis. "We have ample supply of both Pfizer and Moderna. There is not reason to wait to go get your vaccine."

All mass vaccination sites are currently accepting walk-ins and same day appointments continue to be available.

On average, around 3,345 vaccines were given out daily over the last week. In June, there were around 7,000 vaccines being administered on a daily basis.

According to the latest epidemiological study, the COVID-19 case rate in Windsor-Essex increased slightly over the last seven days and sits at 2.3 cases per 100,000 residents. Only 0.5 per cent of those tested are positive for the virus.

On Friday, the health unit reported five new cases in the community. There are now 17 active cases.
