Cinema returns to downtown Windsor this weekend

Movie buffs will once again see films under the stars in downtown Windsor, starting this weekend.

The Windsor International Film Festival (WIFF) is setting up its projectors in Charles Clark Square starting Friday, kicking off a second straight summer of film screenings outdoors. WIFF Under the Stars began last summer with the region affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the second year in a row, the actual WIFF, held each fall, was cancelled due to the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic.

The films will be shown on a large LED screen and be accompanied by a state-of-the-art sound system.

The program begins Friday afternoon with the climate change film Entourage, followed by the French feature How to Be a Good Wife. Next up is the documentary Meeting the Beatles in India, with the Friday night finale being the Academy Award-winning comic thriller Parasite, presented in black and white.

Saturday's films begin with the animated feature Royal Corgi, then a documentary on the history of the long-running children's program "Sesame Street". Next up is the jazz feature No Ordinary Man, followed by Abe, a comedy-drama about a young chef. The Saturday evening slate includes the animated feature Castles in the Sky, then the drama Wild Mountain Thyme. The program concludes with All the Streets Are Silent, the Convergence of Hip Hop and Skateboarding.

A total of eight films are on the bill for Sunday, beginning with the animated Terra Willy, then the weightlifting documentary Lift Like a Girl. Next up is the crowdsourced documentary Motherload, and the locally-produced feature The North Was Our Canaan. The Sunday program continues with the Indigenous-themed Beans, and the drama The Price of Desire. Kusseipan, a film set in the Quebec Innu community, is up next, with the finale being the documentary Creem: America's Only Rock and Roll Magazine.

Attendees must register in advance as COVID-19 safeguards remain in place. Filmgoers are asked to bring their blankets, lawn chairs, and be ready to dress according to the weather. Registration can be found here.
