Last chance for PSW financial assistance program

Students looking to take advantage of the financial assistance available for PSW training have until the end of the month to apply.

About 65 students have already received support at Windsor's Westervelt College and 40 more are expected to start before the end of the month.

"We're really encouraging people who are looking for a second career or looking to go into the health care sector, these are jobs that are needed you're going to graduate into a job and the government is going to support you in that journey into a job," said Minister of Colleges and Universities Jill Dunlop.

Eligible students may receive up to $13,467.50 to cover the costs of tuition, books, mandatory fees and a stipend for their clinical placement. Students must apply to the Ontario Student Assistance Program before July 31, 2021, to qualify for the funding.

Around 300 students have taken advantage of the program through Westervelt College.

"It's been profound, just to see the number of students who have been able to qualify for this. Because the fund is open, it has really provided a lot of our population the opportunity to come to school," said President of Westervelt College Don Thibert.

In total, the government funded 8,000 spots to train PSWs through private career colleges and district school boards throughout the province.
