Essex urging residents not to "blow it"

A local municipality has asked residents to watch what they do with their grass clippings and yard waste.

The Town of Essex has started "Don't Blow It", an awareness campaign about grass clippings on roadways, urging residents to make sure those, and other forms of yard waste, are not just blown into the street.

"A few grass clippings on the road may not seem like much, but when damp or wet, they could create a slippery surface which may be considered hazardous for road users like cyclists and motorcyclists, especially when braking," said Town of Essex Infrastructure Services Director Kevin Girard.

In addition to the potential dirty looks you may get from neighbours, other debris from lawnmowers, such as flying rocks, may cause injury to others or property damage. Grass and organic waste may also build up and block storm sewers, resulting in drainage problems.

Girard suggested that when it's time to mow your lawn, make sure your discharge chutes are clear when you begin, and keep them pointed away from the street or sidewalk. If this is not possible, homeowners should use a mulching bag. Brooms and lawn blowers can also be used to brush away excess grass clippings.

The "Don't Blow It" campaign will also be used in print materials and on social media, providing tips on safe mowing.
