Health unit advises caution in warm weather

The Victoria Day weekend is underway, with warm weather in the forecast and health officials urging people to take it easy.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has put out a special weather statement due to very warm and humid temperatures Friday, based on information provided by Environment Canada.

While the region is not expected to have weather falling under the heat warning criteria, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said everyone is at risk from the heat. Older adults, infants, younger children, people who work or exercise outdoors, and those with medical conditions are especially vulnerable.

"Warning signs of heat-related illness include dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, weakness and confusion," read a statement from the health unit. "If you experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention. Call and check on friends, family and neighbours frequently during heat events, and even after the weather cools off, as they may still feel the effects of the heat."

Other tips include drinking plenty of water and water-based beverages, even if you don't feel thirsty. Caffeine-based drinks are not ideal.

The health unit also recommends working or exercising outdoors during the cooler parts of the day, wearing light-coloured clothing and a hat, or taking cool showers or baths.

Never, ever, leave a child, adult, or a pet in a parked car. Vehicle interiors can reach dangerously high temperatures quickly, even with a window down.
