Dr. Ahmed urges residents to enjoy long weekend safely

With the COVID-19 case rate remaining high in the region, Windsor's medical officer of health is urging people to enjoy this long weekend safely.

Dr. Wajid Ahmed said it is important that residents enjoy the newly opened outdoor recreational facilities while maintaining public health guidelines.

“COVID-19 and variants of concern remain a considerable threat to our community wellbeing. We have already seen how quickly our case counts can go from 16 to 70 in just one day. It is important that everyone remembers to maintain good public health practices while enjoying and engaging in any activities outside of your home, regardless of vaccination status,” said Dr. Ahmed.

The overall case rate in the region increased slightly this week and sits at 65.1 cases per 100,000 population. The positivity rate among individuals tested remains unchanged at 5.2 per cent.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported 38 new cases of COVID-19 and two additional deaths linked to the virus on Friday.

A woman in her 50s and a man in his 60s both passed away after contracting the virus. Both cases involved a variant of concern. There have been 424 deaths in the region linked to COVID-19.

There are now 325 active cases in the community and 159 of them involve a variant of concern.

To date, 48.3 per cent of the total population in Windsor-Essex have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Only 3.8 per cent of the population has received both doses of the vaccine.

Vaccine appointments continue throughout the long weekend including on Monday.
