Citations issued after downtown Windsor protest

Windsor police say over two dozen people were issued fines after a protest downtown Wednesday night.

Constable Darius Goze told Blackburn News that a crowd of between 450 and 500 people gathered downtown for a rally in favour of Palestine.

Police said one rally organizer was charged under the Reopening Ontario Act for the large gathering and was issued a noise by-law citation.

In addition, at least 25 notices of provincial offence were given out for traffic violations, along with by-law infractions such as stunt driving, noise, driving without a seat belt, and others.

While police recognize the right of people to gather peacefully under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Windsor police say care must be taken to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

"At the current time, we are also facing a global pandemic and a limit has been placed on gatherings in Ontario to stop the spread of COVID-19," read a notice posted on the WPS Twitter page. "We ask that you be respectful of provincial, regional, and municipal guidelines and laws."
