Windsor Assembly Plant shutdown extended again

Employees at the Stellantis Windsor Assembly Plant are being asked to sit out a little longer.

Unifor Local 444, which represents hourly workers at the plant, announced on its Twitter page Wednesday morning that the current shutdown at WAP will be extended once more. This time, the plant will remain closed the week of May 24.

No additional details were provided by the union.

Company spokesperson LouAnn Gosselin told Blackburn News that the shutdown continues due to a shortage of microchips, which has affected auto production worldwide.

"Stellantis continues to work closely with our suppliers to mitigate the manufacturing impacts caused by the various supply chain issues facing our industry," said Gosselin. "Due to the unprecedented global microchip shortage, production at the Windsor Assembly Plant will be down the week of May 24. The plant will run a partial shift the week of May 31."

The plant has been idled since the week of March 29 because of the chip shortage.
