WECHU reports another COVID-19 related death

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported 59 new cases of COVID-19 and another death linked to the virus in the region.

A man in his 50s passed away after contracting the virus. There have been 420 deaths connected to COVID-19 in the region since March 2020.

There are now 340 active cases in the community and half of those involve variants of concern. More than 90 per cent of the cases involving variants have been confirmed as the UK variant, however the Brazilian and the South African variant have also been confirmed in the region.

As of Thursday morning, 189,075 people or 55.5 per cent of adults in the region had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

“The uptake in our area has been going very well. We also acknowledge that there may be more coverage in Windsor-Essex County based on people receiving the vaccine out of Ontario, so we are looking at how we can receive that information from people who may have received their vaccine in the States,” said CEO and Chief Nursing Officer Theresa Marentette. “Hopefully our coverage continues to increase. Having 55 per cent of adults over 18 currently immunized is really good.”
