Windsor police cleared in man's death

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has ended its probe into the death of a Windsor man last month.

Windsor police were called on April 12 to a home on Hall Avenue after a woman reported that her boyfriend was in medical distress after he had consumed medication and gasoline. A Windsor officer began CPR on the man and was eventually relieved by firefighters. Paramedics rushed the man to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

SIU Director Joseph Martino said there was no evidence of wrongdoing by police, and the investigation has ended.

"Based on the SIU’s preliminary inquiries, there is patently nothing to investigate as far as the potential criminal liability of any police officer is concerned in connection with the man’s death," said Martino. "On this record, it is plain and obvious that no officer contributed to the man’s death in any manner that could conceivably attract criminal liability. Accordingly, the file is closed."

The SIU is the provincial law-enforcement oversight agency that invokes its mandate after incidents in which a law-enforcement officer is involved that pertain to a death, serious injury, sexual assault, or the firing of a weapon at a person.
