Phase 3 Cabana Road West project underway

The City of Windsor has begun work on the third phase of a major project to update a stretch of Cabana Road West.

Construction on Cabana between Dougall Avenue and Dominion Boulevard should last until the end of the year.

Crews will expand the road to two lanes each way. New sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and street lights will go in, and the boulevard gets new sod and trees.

The city is also adding new bicycle lanes separated from vehicular traffic, adding another 1.5 kilometres of bike path along Cabana Road West.

Over the next eight months, the city said new storm sewers and private drain connections would go in between Mount Carmel Drive and Dougall Avenue. New water mains and service lines will be installed on Cabana, Northway Avenue, and Dougall Avenue. Longfellow Avenue will be converted to a one-way street for northbound traffic.

"The Cabana Road Corridor improvements demonstrate council's commitment to expanding Windsor's active transportation network as we build safer, better roads with improved connections between neighbourhoods for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens. "This work also advances the implementation of the Sewer Master Plan."

The work continues a $46-million investment to rebuild the Cabana Road corridor between Walker Road and Highway 3. The final phase, between Walker Road and Provincial Road, is planned for 2023.

The city first announced the project in 2016, and Phase 3 should cost $13-million.
