Jobless rate climbs to 10.6 in Windsor

The jobless rate in Windsor hit the double digits again, as another 1,900 people joined the ranks of the unemployed.

The local economy added another 3,000 jobs in April, but the labour force grew by another 4,900 people, and that pushed the jobless rate up 0.8 percentage points from March to 10.6 per cent last month.

Windsor's unemployment rate was the third-highest in the country last month, behind Belleville and St. Catharines.

Provincially and nationally, employment took a hit last month.

Across Canada, the economy shed 207,000 net jobs, both full and part-time pushing the unemployment rate up 0.6 percentage points to 8.1 per cent.

More Canadians worked less than half of their usual hours last month as the third wave of the pandemic forced provinces to tighten public health restrictions. That group grew by over 27 per cent, while the number of people working from home increased by another 100,000 to 5.1-million.

The industries that lost the most jobs are the ones most impacted by lockdowns and emergency brake measures designed to stem the growing number of COVID-19 cases. Retail shed 84,000 jobs across Canada, while accommodation and food services lost 59,000, and the information, culture and recreation sector saw employment shrink by 26,000 positions.

In Ontario, where a stay-at-home order took effect on April 8, the jobless rate increased from 7.5 per cent in March to 9 per cent.

Statistics Canada conducted its Labour Market Survey for April during the week of April 11 to April 17.
