Windsor man charged with being a fake cop

Ontario Provincial Police have arrested a Windsor man for allegedly impersonating a police officer.

A driver approached officers at the Leamington detachment on Friday, reporting that a man identified himself as a police officer during a traffic stop.

Patrol officers on Talbot Street West soon noticed a black Chrysler 300 driven by a male. Both the car and driver matched the complainant's description, according to OPP Constable Steven Duguay.

Allen Carpenter, 56, has been charged with personating a police officer. He has been released from custody and will have a chance to defend himself against the charge in a Windsor court on June 29.

The OPP would like to remind residents that if they believe someone is posing as a police officer, they should call 911 immediately. Do not leave your vehicle for any reason. If possible, get a description of the person, their vehicle, and licence plate once you can do so safely.

Legitimate police officers will be happy to provide, upon request, their names, badge numbers, identification, and-or the name of a supervising officer.
