You will see a lot more people riding e-scooters around the City of Windsor soon.
Bird Canada is providing 500 Bird Two e-scooters for the public's use along the riverfront.
It is part of a one-year pilot project approved by the city in March. Bird Canada has hired a local management team that will manage the rollout.
This summer, the company will bring its S.H.A.R.E. Safe Streets tour to Windsor and educate users on how to safely use the e-scooters. It will offer tutorials, parking best practices, and free helmets.
Users will have to be at least 16, and helmet use is mandatory for all riders under 18. Each e-scooter has a bell, brake, and light. They are not allowed on sidewalks but are permissible on all municipal cycling paths, multi-use paths, footbridges, and roads with a speed limit of 50 km/h.
E-bikes will be introduced later in the season.
Before use, riders will need to download the Bird app on their smartphone, which will give them a tutorial.
They will be available for rental along the riverfront path between Prince Road and Drouillard Road and to the south, Tecumseh Road.
The e-scooters will also feature Windsor-specific branding.
