Maidstone Water Tower to be officially decommissioned

The Municipality of Lakeshore is officially decommissioning the Maidstone Water Tower.

The water tower has been out of use for three years, but councillors considered whether to rehabilitate it or not.

They decided against it after hearing the Belle River water supply system can satisfy needs in the area, and that rehabilitation would cost $1.9-million. Building a new trunk sewer line to Wallace Line would be another $1.25-million.

Only 40 per cent of the cost of the trunk sewer would be covered by development charges.

"The Municipality of Lakeshore is acting responsibly in decommissioning old infrastructure and planning for the future," said Mayor Tom Bain. "While there are costs to decommission the Maidstone Water Tower, the costs to bring it back online are much greater. It would be fiscally irresponsible."

Administration will continue to monitor the tower for safety until it has to be demolished.
