Over 15K COVID-19 cases recorded in Windsor Essex

The Windsor-Essex region hit another milestone on Thursday with over 15,000 cases of COVID-19 recorded in the region since the start of the pandemic.

To date, 15,022 cases have been identified and 14,132 are now considered resolved. There are currently 478 active infections in the community.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit also reported one new death connected to COVID-19 in the region. A woman in her 80s, who lived in a retirement home, passed away after contracting the virus. Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said she contracted the virus a while ago and passed away after complications. There have been 412 deaths in the region linked to the virus.

On Thursday, the health unit reported 57 new cases of COVID-19. Among the new cases, 22 were infected by close contacts, 10 cases were community-acquired, one is outbreak-related, and one is related to travel outside of North America. Health Unit staff continue to investigate 23 instances of the virus.

Local hospitals are currently treating 20 people with the infection, and three of those are receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.

To date, 130,897 people, or 29 per cent of the total population in Windsor-Essex, have received at least one dose of a vaccine. Only 3 per cent of people have been fully vaccinated.
