The City of Windsor is spending $592,650 to upgrade traffic cameras at major intersections.
The city uses a combination of analogue detection and closed-circuit television cameras. Over the coming months, it will replace many of those analogue units.
The cameras that still work will be installed at intersections that do not have one now.
Only 20 per cent of Windsor's most used intersections have a closed-circuit television camera. Another 70 per cent use analogue units. The goal is to have one at all major intersections across the city.
The cameras help the traffic management system better coordinate signals, so traffic moves smoother along busy corridors.
"We have the E.C. Row Expressway to move drivers quickly east and west, and we have upgraded major roadways across the city," said Mayor Drew Dilkens. "[It] is another important step in ensuring Windsor's traffic flow for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians continues to evolve."
Staff can also review historical data while following up on public concerns. Emergency services benefit too. Police can review camera footage while investigating crashes.
