Five impaired driving charges laid over Easter weekend

Provincial police in Essex County charged five residents with impaired driving over the weekend.

Between 6 p.m. Thursday and midnight Monday, OPP received five calls from residents who suspected they saw drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  Two of the calls involved minor collisions.

Each driver now faces alcohol and or drug-related charges. In addition, they face an automatic driver's licence suspension, a day in court, the cost of the towing, and impound fees.

"The OPP urges those drinking or using drugs to re-consider before getting behind the wheel and to choose alternative transportation, which will significantly increase the likelihood of a safe arrival at your destination while maintaining your driving privileges," said Constable Amanda Allen in a news release.

The OPP also thanked residents who made the calls about the suspected impaired drivers.  Anyone who thinks they see someone driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is encouraged to call the police immediately at 1-888-310-1122 or 911 if it's an emergency.
