Windsor-Essex health unit CEO Nursing Officer announces retirement

The CEO and Chief Nursing Officer of the Windsor Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) has announced her plans to retire this summer.

In a release put out by the health unit Thursday evening, Theresa Marentette said she feels privileged to have served the community for over 30 years.

"The WECHU has been my home for a large part of my life," Marentette said. "This past year has been one of the most challenging years of my career as a nurse and a leader. With the vaccine implementation well underway and a strong leadership team in place, it feels like the right time to start a new chapter."

Marentette began her nursing career at the Salvation Army Grace Hospital before joining the health unit as a public health nurse in 1989. She took over the role of CEO and Chief Nursing Officer in 2017.

"Theresa has worked non-stop for our community. She has supported our staff, our management team and myself through its most difficult times," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed. "Theresa’s focus and commitment has never wavered, her leadership in public health will be missed,"

The Board of Health will begin transitioning the health unit to new leadership. Marentette's last day with WECHU is set for June 30.
