Windsor to remove unsanctioned bike trail (VIDEO)

Bike enthusiasts will need to find another place to ride after the city of Windsor announced the removal of an east-end trail.

Windsor City Council voted Monday to remove an unsanctioned off-road trail that was created in an environmentally-sensitive area of the Little River Corridor Park. The city said the decision was made to protect public safety as well as protect city taxpayers from liability.

"We understand cycling enthusiasts have the best of intentions when they build these trails, but these trails are not designed or engineered in accordance with industry best practices, and the members of the community are not authorized to ensure safe infrastructure is built," said James Chacko, the city's senior parks manager. "In this case, the layout, ramps, culverts and materials used could easily lead to unanticipated injuries, and, as park owner, the city has to head off potential liability by acting."

Crews will be in the area this week to remove the trail.

Those who are into off-road cycling have other options within the city. The parks department worked last year with the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) to create sanctioned beginner and medium-level trails at Malden Park and Little River Corridor Park.

This year, the city plans to complete the Malden Park trail project with an uphill and downhill course for expert riders. At Little River Corridor Park, a sanctioned pump track is being put in as well.
