WECHU opens vaccine appointments to 70+ population

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is opening up its COVID-19 vaccine appointment system to residents 70 and older.

Based on current predictions, the health unit expects the 75 plus population will be booked for appointments by April 1, 2021.

"Opening up to 70, we know that in the 70 to 74 age range there's about 22,000 people and we believe we can accommodate all of these people moving forward," said CEO and Chief Nursing Officer Theresa Marentette.

To date, 91 per cent of Windsor-Essex residents ages 80 and older have been vaccinated against COVID-19. Only about 33 per cent of those aged 75-79 have received a vaccine.

Vaccination clinics between the city and county vaccinate around 1,900 residents a day. This does not include the number of people receiving vaccines through local pharmacies.

Over 77,670 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the region. About 12,074 people have received both doses of the vaccine.
