UPDATE: Windsor Assembly to shut down again due to chip shortage

Another unexpected break is coming to employees at the Stellantis Windsor Assembly Plant.

Unifor Local 444 announced on its social media pages Thursday evening that the plant will shut down for four weeks, starting Monday.

Few additional details have been released, but the union said that the shutdown is the result of a shortage of microchips for vehicles, a shortage that has affected every major automaker in North America.

This is the second time in 2021 that the plant will face a shutdown due to a microchip shortage. WAP was shutdown the first week of February for three weeks due to the issue.

Stellantis Canada spokesperson LouAnn Gosselin provided a statement Friday afternoon.

"Stellantis continues to work closely with our suppliers to mitigate the manufacturing impacts caused by the various supply chain issues facing our industry," it read. "Due to the unprecedented global microchip shortage, production at the Windsor Assembly Plant will be down beginning next week through late April."
