Residents told to check back daily for vaccine appointments

If residents 75 and older were unable to book vaccine appointments on Tuesday, they are being told to check back daily.

COVID-19 vaccine appointments are currently only available 3-4 days in advance. The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is not opening the schedule for a longer time-frame because of the vaccine supply. Appointments can be made online or by calling 226-773-2200.

"When we get a more regular notification of our allotment I think it will be easier to actually book," said CEO and Chief Nursing Officer Theresa Marentette.

The health unit has partnered with the City of Windsor, County of Essex, and local hospitals to create a one-stop location for vaccine information. For details on vaccine availability, clinics and prioritization plans go to WEVax.ca.

There have been 70,940 COVID-19 vaccine doses given out in Windsor-Essex.

On Wednesday, the health unit reported 19 new cases of COVID-19 in the region. Among them, five are close contacts of confirmed cases, three are community-acquired, and 11 are still under investigation.

There are 245 active cases in the community.

Local hospitals are treating 14 patients who have tested positive for the virus, and four of those are in the ICU.
