Vaccine booking questions answered

When the Windsor Essex County Health Unit launches its new vaccination booking system Tuesday, residents 75 and older will be able to book appointments for the time and location most convenient to them.

Appointments can be booked at the Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Centre in Leamington, the WFCU Centre, the St. Clair College Sportsplex, or the University of Windsor's Windsor Hall. A second county location is expected to open in Amherstburg soon.

At this time, the health unit is only booking appointments for the first doses. Anyone who has already received their first dose will be contacted when second doses are available.

Anyone 80 and over who pre-registered with the health unit by Saturday afternoon will have appointments booked before the end of the week. They will not have to book an appointment through the new system.

Vaccination clinics remain appointment only and walk-ins are not permitted.

Transit Windsor just announced it is offering free rides to people going to their vaccine appointments. The free service is available immediately, the person just has to tell the driver they are going for their vaccine.

To date, 64,513 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to residents of Windsor-Essex. Only 12,059 people have received both doses.

On Monday, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported 11 new cases of COVID-19 in the region. Among the new cases, one case is outbreak-related, four cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, two cases are community-acquired and four cases are still under investigation.

There are 282 active cases in the community now. Local hospitals are treating 25 people who have tested positive for the virus.
