Three fires lead to arson charges

A Windsor woman is facing charges in connection with three deliberately set fires over the weekend.

The Windsor Police Service says the first fire happened around 5:30 a.m. Saturday close to a garbage bin on Victoria Avenue near Wyandotte Street West. The fire was extinguished quickly. There were no suspects found in the area.

The second fire happened just 15 minutes later on Bruce Avenue. In this case, a couch that had been left out as garbage was set on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished. Patrol officers witnessed a suspect take off as they arrived on the scene.

While officers were investigating the first two fires, they received a report of another possible fire on Janette Avenue. Witnesses told police that someone was at a home and flames were seen flickering on and off.

A person matching the description of the suspect was found on Wyandotte Street West between Caron Avenue and Janette Avenue. A suspect was arrested without incident.

Beth Westwood, 27, is facing three counts of arson. The charges have not been proven in court.

The Windsor Police Arson Unit continues to investigate several other recent arson events throughout the city. All of the fires are being investigated separately but officers are looking for links.

Investigators are asking anyone in the area of any of these fires with surveillance video to review their footage for possible evidence.
