Windsor-Essex logs 25 additional COVID-19 cases

The Windsor-Essex region saw an increase of 25 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday.

According to the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, two of Sunday’s cases are community-acquired, six are outbreak-related, six are close contacts of confirmed cases and 11 remain under investigation.

As of Sunday, there are now 13,405 confirmed cases in the region, 313 of which are active cases. There were a total of 22 recoveries over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of resolved cases to 12,695.

There were zero additional COVID-19 deaths recorded on Sunday with the local death toll remaining at 397.

As of Sunday, four long-term care and retirement homes in the region remain in COVID-19 outbreak –Riverside Place, Leamington Mennonite Home, Devonshire Retirement Residence and Dolce Vita.

There are also four workplace outbreaks, two community outbreaks, three school outbreaks and a single hospital outbreak.

To date, 18,944 residents have gotten their first dose of the vaccine while 11,848 have received both doses.

On Sunday morning, Premier Doug Ford announced a new centralized phone and online system to book COVID-19 appointments across Ontario.

However, health officials in Windsor-Essex confirmed that they will continue using the online pre-registration system that has been in place locally since vaccinations began in the region.

In Ontario, provincial health officials logged 1,747 additional cases of the virus on Sunday. The total number of cases in the province is now at 318,106 with 298,570 and 7,153 deaths.
