31 new COVID-19 cases in Windsor-Essex, coffee shop added to exposure list

An additional COVID-19 related death is being reported in the Windsor-Essex region.

The death, along with 31 new cases of the virus, was reported on Saturday morning by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.

The latest person to pass away was a man in his 70s from the community.

The total number of people who have died due to the virus in the region now sits at 393. Meanwhile, the total number of cases is now at 13,126. Of those cases, 222 are listed as being active and 39 are hospitalized.

According to the health unit, 13 of the latest cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, one is community-acquired and 17 cases are still under investigation.

There remain just two long-term care or retirement home outbreaks, five workplace outbreaks and three community outbreaks.

There are also two current school outbreaks in the region- Bellewood Public School and Monseigneur Jean Noel.

Windsor Regional Hospital is currently dealing with one outbreak within the 7 North Unit at the Met Campus. According to a media release from the hospital, the outbreak within its Clinical Teaching Unit at the Ouellette Campus was declared over on Saturday.

According to the health unit, 8,020 Windsor-Essex residents have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine as of Saturday and 11,613 have received their second dose.

Meanwhile, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has identified another potential COVID-19 transmission site.

The health unit announced on Saturday, that the location is the Starbucks on Tecumseh Road East, between Lauzon Parkway and Jefferson Boulevard. The dates of exposure are February 28 between 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and March 1 from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Like all the exposure alerts currently in place, this one is low-risk. However, anyone who visited the store during that date and time is asked to self-monitor for 14 days from the date of the exposure. If you have symptoms, stay home and contact your health care provider for further instructions.

Elsewhere, provincial health officials recorded a total of 990 new cases of the virus on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases in Ontario to 306,997.
