WECHU reports 53 new cases of COVID-19

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported 53 new cases of COVID-19 in the region on Tuesday.

“We have an opportunity here to get COVID-19 under control,” said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed. “Our cases are no longer in the 200s, our vaccination rates for the long-term care and retirement homes is pretty high, and we are hopeful that it will help save our most vulnerable in the community.”

Since Monday’s report, 364 people recovered from the virus bringing the number of  active cases in the community to 1,156.

The health unit also reported an additional four deaths in the community connected to COVID-19. Two were residents of longterm care and retirement facilities and two were members of the general community. There have been 295 deaths linked to the virus since March.

Local hospitals are treating 108 patients with COVID-19, of which 15 are receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.
