Seven deaths, 87 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex

For the first time in several weeks, health officials in Windsor-Essex are reporting double-digit COVID-19 numbers instead of triple-digit.

On Saturday, the Windsor-Essex County health unit reported 87 new cases of the virus in the region.

According to the health unit, 24 of the cases are outbreak-related, two are close contacts of a confirmed case, one is community-acquired and 60 cases are still under investigation.

There were also seven new deaths reported on Saturday.

The latest fatalities include a man in his 70s, a man in his 80s and a woman in her 90s, all from a long-term care or retirement home.

Four men from the general community also passed away, one who was in his 70s, one in his 80s and two in their 90s.

The total number of people who have died due to the virus in the region now sits at 255. Meanwhile, the total number of cases is now at 10,752. Of those cases, 2,569 are listed as being active and 120 are hospitalized.

There remain 21 long-term care or retirement home outbreaks, 23 workplace outbreaks, one community outbreak and three hospital outbreaks in Windsor-Essex.

Elsewhere, provincial health officials recorded a total of 3,056 new cases of the virus on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases in Ontario to 234,364.

According to Health Minister Christine Elliot, 189,090 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the province as of Friday evening.
