Windsor-Essex surpasses 10,000 cases of COVID-19 since March

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported a new single-day record of new COVID-19 cases with 288 cases reported on Wednesday.

That brings the region’s total caseload since March to 10,278.

The health unit also reported 11 additional deaths in the region connected to COVID-19. Nine were residents of long-term care homes between the ages of 50 and 90. Two were members of the general community, a woman in her 50s and man in his 70s.

“I am hopeful with the extended measures, with a hard lockdown now by the province and by the premier it should help people stay home and stay safe and will help us bring the case counts down and save our healthcare system and save lives,” said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed.

There are 2,812 active cases in the community.

The health unit is currently monitoring 45 active outbreaks in the community including 21 in long-term care and retirement facilities.

Local hospitals are treating 99 people who have tested positive for COVID-19.
