Another 16 deaths connected to COVID-19 in Windsor Essex

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported another 16 deaths in the community linked to COVID-19, boosting the death toll locally to 226 since March.

All of the deaths were among residents in their 80s and 90s. Fourteen were residents of long-term care homes and two were members of the general population.

The health unit continues its efforts to administer the COVID-19 among retirement homes in the community. By the end of the day Tuesday, 13 out of 24 homes should be completed. All of the retirement homes in the region should be done by the end of the week.

The first distribution at long-term care homes was completed over the weekend. Only residents who declined the vaccine or who are actively fighting a virus were not given the vaccine. The health unit continues to work with all homes to continue vaccination efforts.

There were 175 new cases of COVID-19 reported Tuesday bringing the total number of cases since March to 9,990.  Of those new cases, public health officials are still investigating how 144 people caught the virus.  Another 19 cases are linked to the region's 45 active outbreaks, three were acquired in the community, and nine are from close contact with cases that have already been confirmed.

A total of 2,661 cases are still active.

CEO Theresa Marentette said 101 people remain in the hospital, 17 of which are in intensive care.

As of Tuesday, 71 per cent of all cases so far during the pandemic have been resolved.
