Windsor-Essex COVID-19 death toll passes 200

With an additional 12 COVID-19 related deaths reported Friday morning, Windsor-Essex has surpassed another grim milestone.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has reported 202 deaths in the community since March. Among the deaths reported Friday, 10 were residents of longterm care homes and two were members of the general community.

The health unit also reported 201 new cases of the virus in Windsor-Essex, bringing the total number of cases since March to 9,246.

In Windsor-Essex, the virus has had a 2.1 per cent overall death rate. However, among residents in long-term care and retirement facilities, the death rate climbs to 16.9 per cent.

There are currently 39 active outbreaks of COVID-19 being monitored by the health unit.

The outbreak at Hotel-Dieu Grace Health Care is now resolved. The hospital had been managing the outbreak since the end of November.

Local hospitals are treating 95 people who have tested positive for the virus,. Of those, 15 are in the intensive care unit.

Ontario reported another record number of cases Friday with 4,249 new cases throughout the province.
