The City of Windsor is looking to implement financial incentives to encourage development along the University Avenue West corridor and the Wyandotte Street West corridor.
The city’s planning department has put together a draft community improvement plan for the west end neighbourhood from downtown to Huron Church Road.
"The strength of our neighbourhoods are dependent on the strength of our main streets. A CIP for both University Ave. W. and Wyandotte Ave. W. will help accelerate residential and commercial development along these two vital corridors, creating better walkability, connectivity and economic opportunities between our west side and downtown," said Ward 2 Councillor Fabio Costante.
The plan hopes to spur commercial and residential developments along the corridor to revitalized the area.
Over the summer, a redevelopment plan for the former Grace Hospital site was approved by Windsor City Council. Fairmount Properties, a company from Ohio, is planning a $100-million mixed-use development called Global Village Windsor with residential units, restaurants, retail, green space, and maybe even an urgent care facility.
“The successful completion of the expression of interest in the former Grace Hospital site and the exciting plans for that property underscore the reality that major economic renewal is just around the corner for the neighbourhoods just west of downtown. A robust CIP will further help boost prosperity for local families and small businesses and community input will be vital, moving forward,” said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.
Proposed financial incentives in the CIP include a facade improvement program and a building/property improvement tax increment grant program.
