Outbreak confirmed at Immaculate Conception

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board has confirmed a third COVID-19 outbreak in its system.

At least two people within a cohort at Immaculate Conception Catholic Elementary School in Windsor have tested positive for the virus, according to Windsor-Essex County Health Unit Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed.

"There are currently at least two confirmed cases of COVID-19 in a single classroom," said Ahmed in a media release. "The entire class was previously dismissed and asked to isolate for a period of 14 days and get tested for COVID-19. The outbreak is currently limited to a single cohort at this time."

The WECDSB's website reported Thursday morning that the outbreak affects a student and two staff members. As is procedure, the board is not releasing names or identities of any positive cases.

Parents of the affected students have already been notified.

Immaculate Conception joins L.A. Desmarais Elementary and St. Mary's Catholic French Immersion as schools with current outbreaks. The WECDSB reported a total of ten active cases, six of them students and the rest staff.

The notification is the current protocol for parents, students, and staff at the board, although classes have been via remote since December 11.

Meanwhile, at the Greater Essex County District School Board, there were 24 confirmed cases among students as of Thursday morning, plus four staff. The most recent case was confirmed Monday at Kennedy Collegiate in Windsor.

The board is on its traditional two-week winter holiday break. Remote learning resumes on Monday, January 4, 2021 with a tentative date of January 11 set for the reopening of buildings.
