Two-thirds say they'll get the COVID-19 shot

It may not be enough to achieve herd immunity, but two-thirds of Canadians surveyed said they intend to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

The results were listed in a poll earlier this week by Leger.

Across Canada, 66 per cent of the 1,528 people surveyed said they will get the shot. The number in Ontario, where the number of infections is second only to Quebec, is slightly higher at 68 per cent.

How old you are may also influence your decision. Leger said 80 per cent of those aged 80 and over wanted it. Enthusiasm waned for those who are younger. Fifty-nine per cent of those aged 18 to 34 and 57 per cent of those 35 to 54 planned to get vaccinated.

Reticence over the safety of the vaccination may have determined how many want to get it as soon as it is available. Just 31 per cent said they wanted it as soon as they could. Another 44 per cent said they wanted to wait for others to take it first.

While 16 per cent of those polled had no intention of getting vaccinated, only nine per cent said they think vaccines overall are dangerous. An overwhelming majority of Canadians, 77 per cent, think they are safe.

As for whether the mass vaccination program will mean a return to normal, which would include not wearing face masks, most think not. In Ontario, 69 per cent think the mask is here to stay for some time yet.
