COVID-19 case reported at Assumption High School

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board says a high school student has tested positive for COVID-19.

According to board spokesman Stephen Fields, the student's positive case was identified Wednesday at Assumption Catholic High School in Windsor.

"Due to the fact that the region's Medical Officer of Health has already ordered schools closed there was no need to dismiss the affected cohorts," said Fields "However we did feel that it was still necessary to keep the school communities informed about the situation."

Even with online learning taking place ahead of the two-week winter holiday break, parents of students identified as having been in close contact with the student have been notified. Parents are being asked to monitor their children for symptoms and if they show any, to get tested as soon as possible.

The case at Assumption comes the same day an outbreak was declared at L.A. Desmarais Catholic Elementary in Windsor. Two students from the same classroom tested positive, along with one staff member. The entire cohort was asked to self-isolate. As of Wednesday evening, that is the only reported outbreak within the region's English-language school boards.

A total of 12 students and two staff members have current, active cases of COVID-19, spanning nine buildings.

Meanwhile, at the Greater Essex County District School Board, there was one positive case each at two schools Wednesday, at Essex Public School, and Centennial Central Public School in Comber.

There are a total of 21 active student cases in the GECDSB, plus three staff.
