64 new COVID-19 cases reported in Windsor-Essex, four new deaths

Health officials in Windsor-Essex reported 64 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday and four additional deaths.

The additional cases bring the regional case count to 4,517 and the death toll to 90.

The latest fatalities were a woman in her 90s, two men in their 70s and a man in his 80s. All four individuals were from the community.

The transmission source of a majority of the newest cases is still being investigated. Fifteen cases are from close contact of a confirmed case while three are community-acquired.

Meanwhile, 74 more people recovered from the virus in the region over the past 24 hours. A total of  3,821 of the cases in Windsor-Essex are listed as being resolved with 606 cases currently active. Forty-three people in the region are hospitalized as of Saturday due to the virus.

There are currently nine long-term care or retirement homes, nine workplaces and two schools in COVID-19 outbreak. There is also one hospital outbreak and two community outbreaks.

A case of the virus was also reported at a catholic high school in LaSalle on Saturday. According to the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board, the case has been identified at St. Thomas of Villanova Catholic Secondary School. No cohorts will be dismissed as schools will switch to online learning next week.

A case was also identified within the Greater Essex County District School Board at Sandwich Secondary School.

The latest figures come a day after the province announced it would be moving Windsor-Essex into the “grey-lockdown” classification of its COVID-19 response scale. 

Elsewhere, health officials in Ontario recorded 1,873 additional cases on Saturday and 1,918 more resolved cases.
