WECHU investigating COVID-19 clusters at two hospitals

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is investigating a cluster of cases at Windsor Regional Hospital and Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare.

“The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is working closely with hospital administrators to determine the source of transmission and the potential risk to staff and patients," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed in a statement. "Due to privacy considerations, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is unable to disclose publicly any further details about the cases or the number of close contacts at the hospitals.”

Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare has confirmed it has fewer than 20 cases that are confirmed or under investigation. All affected patients are being tested.

While the investigation is underway, HDGH is implementing additional restrictions. There will be no new admissions on the affected unit and no outside visitors will be allowed. There will also be enhanced cleaning on the affected unit.

Windsor Regional Hospital has confirmed three staff members and one patient on the 7th floor unit of the Ouellette campus have tested positive for COVID-19. An investigation is underway to determine how the transmission took place.

"The cases are not yet connected meaning we don't know whether staff gave it to the patient or the patient gave it to the staff or whether the patient acquired it elsewhere and the staff acquired it elsewhere and that's part of why we are completing an investigation and why we are not calling it an outbreak at this time," said Chief of Staff Dr. Wassim Saad.

The unit remains open, however movement on the floor is currently being restricted.  All patients and staff are being tested for COVID-19.
