A manufacturing company has been slapped with a hefty fine after an employee was injured by a cutting blade two years ago.
Amer-Can Investments Inc. was fined $40,000 on November 20 in a Windsor courtroom after pleading guilty to failing to provide proper safety measures to its employee. The court also imposed a 25 per cent victim surcharge on the manufacturer, which produces wire mesh, conveyor guarding, custom guarding, security fencing, and power coating.
The case stems from an incident that occurred on October 29, 2018, at a factory at 29 Delta Dr. in Harrow when a worker was operating a shear cutter to cut metal stock material. The metal became jammed in and when the worker attempted to remove the material, the foot control that activates the cutter was pressed and the worker came in contact with the blade. The injury required surgery.
During a Ministry of Labour Training and Skills Development investigation, it was found that the manufacturer failed to provide employees with an adequate guard on the sheer cutter.
