Windsor opens 2021 summer student job lottery

It may be late November, but if you're a student interested in a summer job with the City of Windsor, now is the time to start looking.

The city has opened the application period for its 2021 Summer Student Lottery program. Interested applicants may begin to submit their information online.

The number of students to be hired next summer is yet to be determined, with a variety of factors coming into play, such as budgetary considerations, the COVID-19 pandemic, and various factors in the recruitment process.

Jobs are available throughout a variety of city departments. They include road work and maintenance, weed cutting, customer service and clerical work, park and greenhouse maintenance, pothole patching, traffic sign installation, construction work and other positions. The rate of pay for 2021 has not been set, but the rate in 2020 was $16.99 per hour with no shift premiums or fringe benefits allowed.

To be eligible for the lottery, applicants must be 17 years of age or older as of May 1; must be attending university or college full-time with the intention of returning full-time in the fall of 2021; and must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

High school students are not eligible for the lottery because new hires are required to be available for all shifts beginning in late April 2021.

Successful applicants must also be willing to start working all shifts upon the immediate completion of the semester. Applicants are expected to be flexible with scheduling with shifts available on days, afternoons, evenings, midnights, weekends and holidays. The city is also looking for applicants with a positive attitude and the ability to work individually, or as a team, with limited supervision.

Applicants must also hold a valid G or G2 driver’s licence and be able to produce a driver’s abstract, which can be obtained through Service Ontario. A valid emergency or standard CPR certification is also required.

Students who worked for the city previously must submit a new application each year and are limited to a total of three summer work terms.

The city thanks in advance all students who apply for the lottery, but only those selected in the lottery will be contacted via email with further instructions. Notifications will begin in mid to late January.

The deadline to apply is 4:30 p.m. on Monday, January 4, 2021.
